Keep a Scrapbook Journal

Make Your Scrapbooking Efforts Easier With a Journal
By: Vera Raposo

(We would love to give you a journaling-tip to help you along…..)

Journals are a great way to keep track of dates, places, and events that you wish to include in your scrapbooks. You can use a special notebook, PDA, or a calendar to keep track of your scrapbooking ideas.

A journal is also a wonderful way to remember special times in the lives of your friends and family. Amusing thoughts and sentimental feelings can be recorded in your journal to give you ideas for captioning and titles in your scrapbooks.

It is important to keep your journal current. This will save you a lot of time when creating your scrapbook pages. You can write the dates and times of family outings and special occasions such as visits to the zoo, visits from grandparents and other relatives, and make notes as to what each person experienced during these times.

Scrapbooks are more than simple photo albums. They are a chronological history of the places and people that shape our lives.

A journal can keep new scrapbooking ideas fresh in your mind and help you keep your supplies and materials organized.

You do not have to write detailed accounts of every minute of your life in your journal, but instead interesting thoughts and occurrences that will make exciting additions to your scrapbooks and keep memories close at hand.

You can use the information kept in your journal to assist you in organizing your photos in regard to dates and places where the photos were taken, a place to jot down new ideas for scrapbooking themes, and help you keep track of ongoing projects. A journal is very helpful to both casual and professional scrapbookers.

Memories of the Front Door

Some of our greatest memories happen right at our front door….craftsmanfrontdoor

Remember to capture the stories that come and go through your front door. Take a picture of your front door from the inside of the house and/or the outside of the house. What are the first 3 stories that come to your mind that have ANYTHING to with your front door? Is this the place your children rush home to everyday after school? Is this the place you said goodbye to a loved one? Or maybe it represents your freedom and the moment you walked through that door as a home buyer?

Too often memory-keepers get caught up with the BIG moments and events and forget about the sweet and simple ones that actually define us.  Front door memories are part of the sweet and simple side of life.  So capture them and share them.

Spring Flower Memories…

flower-09The other day my sweet little 6-year-old son brought me a handful of tattered dandelions.  He was so proud of his little find and just knew it was going to win me over.  And of course, he was right.  My heart melted as he came barreling through the backdoor and surprised me with his little bouquet.  He told me loved me and then ran right back out to play sword fights and pirates with the neighbor boys.

I watched out the window as he played and couldn’t help but think that one day he’s going to be all grown up, the dandelions will turn to roses or a purchased bouquet from the grocery store.  I wanted to preserve this little sweet moment…

Spring means flowers…and dandelions, and more flowers are given during this time of year than any other time.   Just ahead is Mother’s day, weddings, teacher appreciation, prom and many other events that invite the beauty of the flower.  Flowers represent the many beautiful moments that happen in our lives.  They have special meaning and can remind us of long lost memories and warm the soul as my son’s bouquet of weeds did.

Take the time to keep a flower or two from your yard or ones that you receive as a gift.  Press them in a book and share the story behind them.  Your flower can be a beautiful embellishment in a traditional scrapbook or you add the image of it to a published Cherish Bound book like I do.  Either way, take the time to record the story, memory and moment behind it.

Digital Scrapbooking Meets Story

Last year my oldest daughter made the transition from middle school to high school.  I was so sad and couldn’t believe how fast time had flown by.  It’s incredible how life just moves past you without any warning whatsoever.  We had just moved across the country, she had to start middle school at a school where she didn’t know anyone, start completely over with her sports and hobbies, and did it with an amazing attitude. We promised our kids we weren’t going to move them again. We promised that these were the friends they were going to graduate with. But life throws curve balls and we found ourselves moving again shortly after we had settled. We were moving to a place where she’d be starting all over again, new high school, new friends, new teams, new everything….once again.

So where am I going with all of this? I wanted to give her something special, something she’d treasure forever and help her capture all of her memories and stories from middle and thank her for being so supportive in our next adventure.  I want her to know that her family loves her, knows her and that she can do anything she sets her mind to. I want her to remember that she’s an amazing girl, spiritually strong and that she can make good decisions and be successful in the crazy times of high school.

I collected her report cards, awards, school pictures, sports achievements, letters from family, friends and teachers, scanned in special shirt logos, ticket stubs, etc.   I wrote down all of the big moments and achievements, stories, triumphs and failures.  I listed all of the fun fashions and fads, her favorite foods, colors, music, movies, books, and so on.  Through Cherish Bound, I put all of these images and stories together in an A-B-C format….the ABC’s of Surviving Middle School.

My favorite part was the letters from her family, friends and teachers. As a mother it’s so comforting to see how many people are rooting for her, how many people want her to WIN in life.

I used digital scrapbooking techniques to create a beautiful custom cover, and merged it with Cherish Bound’s custom designed backgrounds and colors to create an adorable book that she’ll treasure forever.

I did the cover with digital scrapbooking downloads from Shabby Princess
I created the cover with the “Express Yourself” Collection
I loaded the entire page as an 8.5×11 portrait size into the Cherish Bound full-bleed template to create the cover.dsc048481

Here’s a peak at the inside of the book….  M is for Mom.

Storytelling Through Photos

Take a look at this photo…

gpa-b

You probably have no idea who those people are, right? Well, that’s my father-in-law. An amazing father to my husband, a prefect FIL to me, yes, I’m a lucky girl, and a man that my children are completely in love with. That was the day he met our twins and the last time we ever saw him. There is a beautiful deep story behind this photo, this man, and this day. It’s a story that needs to be told and shared so my children will remember and know who their grandfather was.

I could simply upload this photo with a few other snapshots into a photo book or throw it up on my wall in a frame. That would be easy, picture preserved and nicely displayed. But who will tell my children and grandchildren about him when I’m gone? What about my babies who won’t remember him? How do we keep his memory alive?

It’s simple…through story.

Story is powerful. When we start telling stories, we connect, teach, and often heal. We relate in a way that brings power and purpose to our lives. Stories change people’s lives. That is why it is so important to take the time to record and write the stories of our lives. Photos are simple beautiful images that help us relive single moments in our lives, but they’re subjective, they can be lost, and simply don’t tell the whole story.

Here are a few simple steps and tips to help you organize and begin storytelling through photos.

1. Get your family involved. Have your spouse, children, parents, everyone in your family begin writing down simple details of their lives.

2. It’s not always about dates, times, and places. It’s about lessons learned, traditions passed on, and leaving a legacy of who we are. Let everyone tell their story.

3. Break it up into bite-size chucks. Start with the now. Start with recording one week at time. Simple moments that define who we are….a sweet husband leaving a love note, a toddler whispering I love you for the first time, a child’s struggle to fit in.

4. Remember that it’s impossible to share every single picture we take. Pick out your favorite two or three from each event or memory and then put the rest in words.

Photos are priceless, but the stories that accompany them are a treasure. A treasure that will be worth more than anything else we leave behind for those we love. As you create your albums, scrapbooks, and photo books keep in mind one simple rule; if I wasn’t here to share this book would they know who the people in these photos and the stories behind them?

Scrap & Tell Your Love

It’s hard to believe, but Valentine’s Day is RIGHT AROUND the corner!  I love couple_holding_handsgiving unique and creative gifts to my hubby.  Thank goodness he’s a simple man, but he’s a sucker for a creative gushy gift at least once a year.  So here are a few of the gifts I’ve given my hubby over the past few years.

For your hubby or significant other, write your love story.  If it’s been a few years, dig back into those cobwebs and think about what made you fall in love with him.  Maybe you have a unique first date or a specific moment that made your heart fall head over hills.  Writing your story can bring back so many wonderful memories, but sharing them with him is…well, a whole different “story”.  You’ll touch his heart and soul through the power of your story.

If you’re into digital scrapbooking create some layouts and drop in some photos of the special places you’ve been together, where you met, your favorite restaurant, and you can even match it up with text from your love story.  Print it out for him or publish it through Cherish Bound.  I can help you take those layouts and stories and put them into a beautiful hardbound book.

Photo Tips for Pregnancy

Pregnancy Photos

By: Vera Raposo

During my pregancy I didn’t really have the desire to have my pregnancy-photos taken, I really wish I would have made more time to get them done.

If you’re anything like me, you’re usually the one holding the camera. Make sure to give the camera to hubbie so he can get the shots you can’t.

Here is what I believe are the best pregnancy-photos that you need to have done. Ok, some may sound a little strange, but believe me you will love looking back on even the silly ones!

Read my list of must have pictures!

Photo #1 Of course the day you found out you were pregnant! There are lots of women who keep the actual pregnancy test… why not take a picture of it and that can go into your pregnancy album?

Photo #2 If you have children…. take a picture of their reaction to the news.

Photo #3 Don’t forget the picture of the surprised daddy!

Photo #4 Get hubbie to take a picture of you calling your family & friends. If you’re having a dinner party to announce the wonderful news, be sure to click away that night.

Photo #5 Get a picture of yourself infront of the doctor’s office on your first visit, even get one with your doctor.

Photo #6 The next time I would bring the camera is when you get to hear the heartbeat for the first time. What a moment to capture! That’s the best moment there is for a mom to be.

Photo #7 Time for some mugshots! Get a nice front shot of yourself, then turn to your side for a profile shot. Do this every month as your pregnancy progresses. Easy to do.

Photo #8 Do you know a friend who can take some pictures of you and your husband? Get some nice shots of your husband with his head on your tummy….putting the music to your tummy…. kissing your tummy…. I could go on and on. Very cute and loving pictures.

Photo #9 Repeat Photo #8, but insert your older children.

Photo #10 Did your older children make something for your baby? Take pictures of them with their proud creations.

Photo #11 Get at least one picture of your doctor measure your belly. This is something that us women do every month with the doctor and it’s so comforting that the baby is growing properly.

Photo #12 Waiting around for an ultrasound? Bring the camera, get a picture of you infront of the hospital. You know they will make you drink a ton of water, so you’re doing the dance anyhow. Bring the camera to keep yourself busy. If there’s no one there with you……you’re in your gown right? Get a nice shot of those swollen feet.

Have fun with your pregnancy-photos! Create your pregnancy album during pregnancy is alot of fun. :)
